Although acupuncture can be highly effective administered on its’ own, other treatments can be used to assist the healing process as described on the treatments page.
Acupuncture: This is the insertion of fine needles into acupuncture points sited along defined meridians that traverse the body. Because the needles are very fine it is virtually painless. Acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy flows through the body in these meridians. This energy is known as Qi. Traditional beliefs are that if Qi cannot flow freely through the body, this can cause illness. Some more modern scientific beliefs are that acupuncture may stimulate nerves and muscle tissue, and that this may be responsible for its beneficial effects.
Cupping: Glass or plastic cups produce a suction effect against the skin. A small vacuum is created inside the cup using a lighted taper and the cup is then placed on the skin. The effect it produces is the opposite to massage whereby the skin and muscles are pulled upward rather than pressured downwards. The benefits of cupping are similar – the muscles within the area become more relaxed. Cups are usually left in place for around 10 minutes or can be glided gently across the skin which has been previously oiled
Moxa A traditional Chinese herb (mugwort) which can be burned to produce heating or eliminating effects within the body. The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen and stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health.
Gua-Sha: Rubbing of the skin in areas of pain reveal varying degrees of redness or ‘sha’. Raising ‘sha’ is said to remove blood stagnation considered pathogenic in traditional Chinese medicine. Modern research shows the petechiae (redness) produces an anti inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days following Gua sha treatment.
Cosmetic Acupuncture: Improves skin tone and texture, stimulates collagen to plump up the skin. Tightens muscles in the face and neck and encourages cell regeneration smoothing lines and wrinkles. (Not recommended for those with high blood pressure, migraine sufferers)
Naturopathy: Is a system that supports the body’s innate ability to heal itself through nutrition, exercise and life-style advice. It is a holistic system which believes that good health is not the same as the absence of disease and that promoting a general state of wellbeing through dietary principles, lifestyle, exercise and other techniques is an effective way to manage our physiological systems. Naturopathy may be beneficial for a wide range of acute or chronic conditions as well as a general practice for living well. With each individual I will offer advice on changes that can be adopted in combination with your acupuncture treatment.
